Social Intelligence

One of the 24 character strengths

Reading a room and the people in it — noticing what someone is feeling, and knowing what would help.

Social Intelligence is the strength of noticing what somebody is feeling and knowing what would help. Both halves are needed; either alone is something else.

The reading happens fast and below the level of a decision. Somebody who leads here can tell from a two-word answer that a friend has had bad news, and will usually be right about which kind.

What makes it a strength rather than a sensitivity is the second half. Knowing what would help means knowing when the answer is to say nothing, when it is to make tea, and when it is to ask the direct question everybody else is stepping around.

What it looks like

Somebody arrives at a party and is fine. Ten minutes later one person quietly asks them if they want to step outside, and they say yes before they have worked out why.

What it costs

The reading does not switch off. A tense room registers whether or not it is any of their business. A whole evening can go on managing an atmosphere nobody asked them to manage.

What Social Intelligence is not

It gets confused with being outgoing, and with being manipulative. Neither follows. Very quiet people are frequently the best at this, and the same accuracy that could be used on somebody is mostly used for them.

Often confused with

  • Kindness

Both are pointed at somebody else's need. Social Intelligence is noticing it; Kindness is acting on it. Either can happen without the other.

  • Perspective

Both are read off other people. Social Intelligence tracks what somebody is feeling right now; Perspective works out what their situation actually is.

What a strength does not say

Everybody has all 24 of these. A result puts them in order within one person, so a strength near the bottom of somebody's list is one they reach for less often rather than one they are missing.

That also means nothing here compares one person with another. There is no reference sample behind these scales, and an order made of somebody's own answers cannot say where they stand next to anybody.
