One of the 24 character strengths
Noticing beauty and skill in nature, in art, in someone doing a thing well, and being moved by it rather than passing it by.
Appreciation of Beauty is the strength of being moved by things rather than only noticing them. Nature, art, and somebody being very good at what they do all count.
This one gets assumed to mean an interest in art. Art is part of it, and a smaller part than people expect. The same reach applies to a field in November light, and to a mechanic who finds a fault by ear. It applies to somebody being quietly decent when nobody is watching.
What separates it from ordinary noticing is that it lands. Somebody who leads here does not simply register that a thing was good. They feel it, and the feeling stays with them for a while afterwards.

It runs on supply. A long stretch with nothing worth stopping for leaves somebody flat, and the flatness rarely gets connected to its cause. Weeks of grey rooms and functional work read as a mood problem rather than as a shortage of the thing this strength runs on.
The usual misreading is that this is refined taste somebody has cultivated, and that it belongs in galleries. It is not about knowing what is good. It is about being reachable by it, which is a different thing and needs no training at all.
Both point outward at the world. Curiosity wants to know how the thing works; Appreciation of Beauty wants to stay with it a moment longer.
Both are about noticing what is already there. Gratitude notices what was given and says thank you; Appreciation of Beauty notices what is excellent and says look at that.
Everybody has all 24 of these. A result puts them in order within one person, so a strength near the bottom of somebody's list is one they reach for less often rather than one they are missing.
That also means nothing here compares one person with another. There is no reference sample behind these scales, and an order made of somebody's own answers cannot say where they stand next to anybody.
