Gratitude

One of the 24 character strengths

Noticing what you've been given, and saying so. Stopping to count what's good rather than treating it as the baseline.

Gratitude is the strength of noticing what was given and saying so out loud. The noticing is the harder half.

Most good things become the baseline within a fortnight. A working boiler, a friend who answers the phone, a job that pays on time: all of them stop registering, which is ordinary and is what this strength interrupts.

Saying so is the second half and the part that reaches other people. Somebody who leads here tells the person, specifically, at the time, rather than assuming it was obvious. That habit is why gratitude is felt privately and works publicly.

It is unglamorous and it compounds. Somebody who does this for a decade ends up surrounded by people who know exactly what they meant to them. That is not a thing anybody plans, and it is hard to arrive at any other way.

What it looks like

Somebody covered a shift six weeks ago and has long since forgotten. A message arrives that says what it meant, in detail, and names the day.

What it costs

Counting what is good can quietly become a way of not looking at what is wrong. Somebody who leads here can talk themselves out of a fair complaint on the grounds that other things are fine, and stay in a situation longer than they meant to.

What Gratitude is not

It gets read as an obligation, or as a technique for feeling better. From inside it is neither performance nor exercise. It is closer to accurate accounting, and the reason it lifts a mood is that the baseline was wrong rather than that anybody decided to be positive.

Often confused with

  • Hope

Both tilt attention toward what is good. Gratitude looks backwards at what has already arrived; Hope looks forward at what might.

  • Appreciation of Beauty

Both stop for something the day was going to walk past. Gratitude stops for what was given; Appreciation of Beauty stops for what is excellent, whoever it came from.

What a strength does not say

Everybody has all 24 of these. A result puts them in order within one person, so a strength near the bottom of somebody's list is one they reach for less often rather than one they are missing.

That also means nothing here compares one person with another. There is no reference sample behind these scales, and an order made of somebody's own answers cannot say where they stand next to anybody.
