Love of Learning

One of the 24 character strengths

Enjoying the act of learning itself — adding to what you know because it's satisfying, not because something requires it of you.

Love of Learning is the strength of enjoying the work, not only the discovery. The slow middle of getting good at something is the part this strength likes.

Curiosity opens a subject; this one stays in it. Somebody who leads here will read the second book on a topic, and the fourth, long after the initial interest that started them has been satisfied.

It runs on its own schedule, which is why it often sits oddly against school and training. Learning because something requires it is a different experience from learning because the learning is satisfying. Only the second one is this strength.

Depth is the usual signature. Somebody who leads here tends to know one or two subjects far past the point anybody needed them to, and to be quietly delighted on the rare occasion it turns out to be useful.

What it looks like

Somebody takes up bread three months ago. There is now a notebook with hydration percentages in it, and nobody asked for the bread to be this good.

What it costs

Preparing can become the activity. A decision can get researched so thoroughly that the window to make it closes. It is possible to end up knowing a great deal about a thing and never once having done it.

What Love of Learning is not

It gets read as being academic. Plenty of people who lead here disliked school intensely, because school is mostly learning on somebody else's timetable and to somebody else's depth, which is the opposite of what this strength wants.

Often confused with

  • Curiosity

The closest pair of the 24. Curiosity is pulled toward the new; Love of Learning enjoys going deeper into something already begun. One opens tabs, the other finishes books.

  • Perseverance

Both stay with something past the interesting part. Perseverance stays because it was started; Love of Learning stays because the middle of it is enjoyable.

What a strength does not say

Everybody has all 24 of these. A result puts them in order within one person, so a strength near the bottom of somebody's list is one they reach for less often rather than one they are missing.

That also means nothing here compares one person with another. There is no reference sample behind these scales, and an order made of somebody's own answers cannot say where they stand next to anybody.
